Mexican marquesitas are a traditional dessert from Yucatán, famous for their crispy texture and delicious filling.
Marquesitas originated in Mérida, Yucatán, in the 1930s when an ice cream vendor sought an alternative for cold seasons. He created a wafer-like dough and filled it with Edam cheese, giving birth to this delicious treat, now a symbol of Yucatecan street food.
What makes marquesitas unique is their versatility. While the classic version includes Edam cheese, modern variations feature Nutella, caramel, jam, hazelnut spread, or even daring combinations with ham or chili powder. Their crispy texture and sweet-savory balance make them an irresistible treat for both locals and tourists.
